Dr. Hanasono researches how people communicate social biases, shatter stigmas, and stop discrimination. She has published scholarship in journals like Communication Research, the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Sex Roles, and Communication Quarterly, and she has contributed research in books published by Oxford University Press, Routledge, Sage, and Kendall Hunt. She has been the PI or Co-PI of over a dozen research grants, including her work as Co-PI of a nearly $1 million NSF ADVANCE Adaptation grant.

In addition to publishing research and securing grant funding, Dr. Hanasono presents her research at academic conferences and in the community. She has delivered over 50 peer-reviewed research papers at international, national, and regional conferences, and she enjoys presenting her scholarship in keynote presentations and special speaking engagements

Dr. Hanasono celebrates collaborative scholarship and works to spark synergies between research, teaching, and mentoring. She leads a research team of graduate and undergraduate students and actively works to secure funding to support her students' scholarly activities.
